The Foundation’s opinion in the case of Garlicki versus Poland

The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights submitted an "amicus curiae opinion" to the Court in Strasbourg in the case of Garlicki versus Poland concerning a well-known cardio-surgeon detained by the Central Anticorruption Bureau on charges of corruption and murder.

In our opinion we mention three plots of this case: the manner of detaining Dr Garlicki (in the spotlight of cameras, in front of several dozen patients); the assessor's decision to apply pre-trial detention against a doctor, as well as the statements of the then Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro, questionable from the point of view of the principle of presumed innocence, on the subject of deeds allegedly committed by Dr Garlicki.
