The Observatory of Media Freedom in Poland has been launched in November 2008, within the scope of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights activity. The main goal of the Program is the increase of standards related to freedom of expression of broadly understood media (newspapers, Radio, TV, Internet). The partner organizations of the Observatory are Human Rights House Foundation from Oslo (Norway) and Article 19 from London (United Kingdom).

The aims of the Observatory are:

(1) The monitoring of the freedom of media in all the 16 administrative regions of Poland and the analysis of eventual breaches of such a freedom;
(2) Providing legal assistance in strategic cases before national courts and the European Court of Human Rights, which will lead to concrete legal and practical changes and an increase in protection standards;
(3) Initiating, conducting and assisting on the merits the public debate on different aspects of freedom of expression.
