Program description

The Cost-free Legal Assistance for Foreigners and Refugees Program was established in 1992. The Program's fundamental activity is to provide cost-free legal advice to foreigners turning to the Foundation and to undertake litigation actions. The scope of the Program's activity also includes monitoring of the observance of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, the provisions of the Geneva Convention of 1951 regarding Refugee Status, the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Liberties and Polish legislation by Polish authorities in cases of foreigners.

Lawyers working within the Program as experts prepare opinions to draft legal acts and programs regarding foreigners and perform informational and training activity regarding the definition of refugee and the rights, to which foreigners are entitled, for various groups of individuals both from Poland and abroad.

Projects regarding various aspects of migration and refugee law are also implemented as part of the program:

  • Migration and Refugee Law Clinic
  • Monitoring of detention of individuals seeking refugee status in new EU Member States (financed from European Union funds)
  • Monitoring of legislation and practice regarding the detention of individuals seeking refugee status in countries of Central Europe (financed from European Union funds)

Individuals interested in the Program's activity have an opportunity to hold student internships and conduct volunteer work.

The program's guardian responsible for contents is Prof. Irena Rzeplińska.
