Program description
The Refugee and Migration Law Clinic began its operation on 1 March 2006. The aim of the Clinic is to provide students and graduates of law with reliable knowledge in the scope of refugee law and the law on aliens, as well as to prepare them for independent work at nongovernmental organizations, law offices for attorneys and legal advisors, international organizations and state administration offices.
The Clinic's Program covers intensive preliminary training and weekly seminars, during which the cases handled by the course's participants as well as theoretical issues are discussed. Expert lectures are also held as part of the course. They are held by outstanding professionals invited by the Foundation, experts in the field of refugee law and the law on aliens, including academic lecturers, employees of the UNHCR, nongovernmental organizations and public administration organs.
Within the confines of the practical part of the Clinic's program, the course participants are required to hold weekly duty-hours, during which they hold meetings with foreigners benefiting from the Foundation's legal assistance. Each course participant is on duty once a week and is moreover required to undertake any actions necessary to provide appropriate legal assistance, particularly to prepare formal letters in administrative proceedings.
The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights Refugee and Migration Law Clinic operates as part of the project Access to Justice - the Equality of Arms in the Judicial Proceedings, financed from the resources of the European Union and Open Society Institute in Budapest. The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights bears sole responsibility for the contents of the above information, as well as for the implementation of the Clinic's program.
Information for the program's beneficiaries:
Individuals benefiting from the program are identified by the employees of the Cost-free Legal Assistance for Foreigners and Refugees Program. These people are informed about the opportunity to benefit from legal assistance as part of the Clinic's program. In case of refusal, assistance is provided on general principles.
